Croatia - 06/10/07 11:40 AM

Hello!
I intend to go to Croatia, all along the coast. Any good ideas? where to fly in best from Spain? is it as windy as people say? any problems there finding where to camp or better find a cheapy hostel?
any suggestion and recommendation is more than welcome.
thanks

Fly to Rijeka or Triest(Italia).
From Triest you can drive through Istria to Opatia, or you drive along the coast. Camping and cheap hotels are not a problem. Often you can ask private families for one night. Thats cheap.

Hi,

I'm planning a trip along the croatian cost as well, but coming from south.
I got the hint it is great taking not only the coast road but to cycle on the island, e.g. from Split by boat to vela luka and then cycling on the islands
Korcula and Peljesac.

Camping seams no problems.

Don't miss Montenegro (if you have time) !

thanks a lot.
Yes, that is my plan. Now I am getting info alltogether and then, depending on the time available, I will plan the trip. The idea I am focusing on is to land o come by boat from Ancona to Split and then do part of the coast doing some island hopping. There are many naturist areas, beaches and camping sites in Croatia.
We will see. I will buy a proper map today to have a look at distances.
Thans a lot Felix

We went through a part of Croatia last year (the northern part), basically from Secovlje through Istria along the coast (Umag, Porec, Vrsar) and then crossed over Istria to Brestova, Ferry to Cres, Ferry to Krk, then to Rijeka, from where we flew home.

What I cannot recommend ist the Istrian coast. The road is very busy, especially with caravans and mobile homes (I'm ashamed to say, most of them from Germany). And the campgrounds in Istria we didn't like at all. The location of most of them on the coast was often great, but I have never seen such large campgrounds... And in one of them we even got robbed, which is not uncommon, as we were told.

Something we really liked was the little bit of island hopping we did. I absolutely loved Cres and Krk wasn't bad either.

Hope that helps, have a good trip!

well, well, that is not what I heard about Croatia. Being robbed is not something I look forward to!
anyway, the trip is already planned and I do want to visit Istria, so, let's cross fingers and hope all will go well.
Thanks anyway for the piece of advice

Hi,

the coast of Dalmatia is really a great landscape!
The best time to go there is before the high season in May. Then a lot of campsites are still close officially but you can enter and use the showers and toilettes for free.
We went from Pak to Dubrovnik all the way three years ago. Look our pictures:

ta to everybody for your piece of advice.
Just returned from my trip. A great country and landscape, clear waters but the traffic is unbearable some times.
I guess in some years it will be impossible to cycle round there unless a green pro biking policy is established.
